The Myth of ADHD

Does the ADHD disorder really exist? We can doubt it for at least three reasons:

  • There is no independent psycho-diagnostic instrument that can prove its existence; drug-oriented questionnaires are not acceptable since they presuppose that psychiatric drugs are the true test for measuring the presence of this pathology. Dr. Lawrence H. Diller wrote: “Practically every researcher in ADHD now accepts drug company money as do the self help groups for at least a part of their work and projects.”

  • There is no medical/laboratory evidence which proves that ADHD might be an organic disease; it is all based on a teacher and a parent filling a questionnaire; and on a clinical interview. There is no other disease that is diagnosed with a pencil-and-paper test; and a chat with a physician. Would you trust a diagnosis of cancer carried out in such a manner? If ADHD was a neurobiological disorder — as it is claimed to be — then it should appear in neurology texts, not in psychiatric literature.

  • There are many pathologies which mimic ADHD and which pertain to a wide variety of aspects of life. A simple common sense rule in science teaches us that the more the symptoms of a given disease overlap with those of other diseases, the more it is likely that it doesn't exist. The pathologies capable of mimicking ADHD are at least seventy in number.
