OISM’s Aims

OSSERVATORIO ITALIANO SALUTE MENTALE

About Us

The Italian Observatory on Mental Health (OISM) was founded in 2001 by Dr Claudio Ajmone, Clinical Psychologist and Psychotherapist, with the purpose of monitoring the congruency of therapeutic theories and practices in psychiatry, their impact on the psychophysical integrity of patients, on their rights, and the social implications of psychiatric laws. OISM adheres to the Human Rights Laws as inspirational Ethics; it does not sustain any Theory on Man, Therapeutic practice, Religious or Political ideology, even though it does consider legitimate to highlight approaches which are respectful of human dignity.

Amongst OISM’s primary commitments are:

  • To oppose the “psychodrugs culture” as an approach to the cure of mental problems;

  • Overcoming of the “Medical Model” of mental problems, the concept of “mental illness”, the ideological “Diagnostic Stigma”;

  • The abolition of “Involuntary Hospitalization” and all the totalitarian institutions (public and private);

  • To oppose “Genetic Projects” which are detrimental to Human Rights and to the fundamental values of Society. For example: the genetic prevention of mental problems through genetical correction of the unborn.

The Association pursues its goals through:

  • Providing correct information on its website;

  • Its newsletter;

  • By publishing eBooks;

  • Participating at conferences and seminars;

  • By its Press-Releases;

  • Collaboration with other organizations that pursue the same goals by democratic means;

  • Interaction with the Institutions.

OISM is independent and has no conflict of interests with drug companies or firms operating in the field of health, Political parties, Unions or Religious Institutions. Affiliation is open to all people who share our Statute, regardless of race, religion, and political faith.
